Making CNC machined parts out of Zinc Alloy

2019-05-03

CNC machining parts out of steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or even plastic such ABS, POM are common to see in market. But we rarely see CNC machined parts be made out of Zinc Alloy. Is it possible or I should ask is it practical to do? Yes, it's possible. However, why not? Zinc alloy has low melting point and good fluidity; hence, it's a good material to be die-casted. CNC machining one part usually take several minutes but die casting one zinc alloy part usually take seconds. Though the die casting mold cost thousands dolloars but the production output is much more. In addition, Zinc alloy is disadvantage of strength comparing to aluminum. It's not the good material to be mechanical components which could be loaded with high force. In some cases, we have CNC machined parts be made out of zinc alloy for prototyping or very small quantity demand in order to save tooling cost.
